Accessible Transportation During the Holidays
Getting around during the holidays can be challenging for everyone, but it can be especially difficult for people with disabilities. That's why, for Day 4 of our "12 Days of Accessibility" campaign, we're sharing resources and tips for navigating the holidays with accessible transportation.
Navigating the Holiday with Accessible Transportation
Public Transportation Options
Paratransit Services- Many cities and towns offer paratransit services for people with disabilities who are unable to use regular public transportation. These services typically require advance booking and may have eligibility requirements.
Accessible Taxis- Some taxi companies offer wheelchair-accessible vehicles. It's important to call ahead to book an accessible taxi.
Ride-Sharing Services- Some ride-sharing services, like Uber and Lyft, offer accessible ride options. You may need to request an accessible vehicle in advance.
Other Transportation Options
Personal Vehicle- If you have access to a personal vehicle, you can use it to get around. Make sure to plan your route ahead of time to avoid traffic congestion.
Family and Friends- Ask family and friends for help with transportation. They may be willing to drive you to holiday gatherings or help you with errands.
Non-Emergency Medical Transportation- If you have a disability that makes it difficult to use public transportation, you may be eligible for non-emergency medical transportation. This service is typically covered by Medicaid or Medicare.
Here are some additional tips for navigating the holidays with accessible transportation:
Plan ahead: Allow plenty of extra time for travel, especially if you're using public transportation.
Be prepared: Bring any necessary mobility aids, such as a wheelchair or walker.
Ask for help: Don't be afraid to ask for help from transit operators or other passengers.
Be patient: Remember that everyone is trying to get to their destinations during the holidays. Be patient with yourself and others.
We hope these resources and tips help you make the most of your holiday travels.
