I am beyond grateful for my fieldwork opportunity at LimbTech. In just 12 weeks, I’ve noticed such profound professional and personal growth that it is truly indescribable. Amy and Kendell have worked with hundreds of students and understand how to push students to their “Just-Right Challenge” to develop critical reasoning, confidence, therapeutic use of self, and problem-solving skills while also being readily available to provide support as needed. LimbTech is a unique placement not only because of its Telehealth services, but because of its opportunity to work on a team with students across the nation. This has allowed for growth in leadership, communication, and other teamwork skills that are difficult to find in other placements. Lastly, LimbTech has opened my eyes to the importance of our role as advocates for both patients and the profession, which has been empowering and further drives my excitement as a future practitioner. I cannot thank Amy and Kendell enough for such a wonderful experience.

Creighton University

When my first level IIA fieldwork setting was cancelled I was scrambling for a new level IIA fieldwork placement in under two weeks. Dr. Amy Siegler and her company LimbTech were more than willing to accept me as a level IIA fieldwork student despite the short notice. My time at LimbTech, was not only my first experience into my level II fieldworks, but it was where I found the confidence in what defines my identity as an OT now. Dr. Amy Siegler and her team welcomed me with open arms and facilitated my learning throughout my 12-week rotation. I had a lot of initial concerns going into a virtual fieldwork placement, but I cannot understate how quickly I felt comfortable with the expectations and new responsibilities as a fieldwork student.

Some of the largest areas where I saw the most growth during my rotation was in my documentation, learning ethical billing, and having the opportunity to understand what it is like to run a small business. From the very start of my fieldwork experience the value of being ethical in how we conduct ourselves through our treatment and billing was at the forefront of the values that LimbTech communicated to me. Some examples include making sure that we bill for the correct services provided to the patient. We made sure to take the necessary time during our evals to gather the most accurate information from the patient. I was able to take these skills into my future fieldworks in different settings such as acute care and outpatient care to expand my OT skillset.

I feel that even though that this setting was a nontraditional setting I do not think that I am a lesser OT for having LimbTech as a level IIA fieldwork. I truly believe that I am a better therapist now having had the opportunity to work for Amy and her team. I really valued LimbTech as a fieldwork experience because It gave me unique skills such as learning how to write letters of medical necessity (LMN), work alongside assistive technology professionals (ATP) and increase my knowledge of telehealth. I believe that this experience was invaluable with helping me understand the world of durable medical equipment (DME) and how it helps individuals maintain their independence and thrive in their valued occupations. I believe that future students will continue to benefit from having a fieldwork rotation with LimbTech not only because many settings now expect certain OT services and patient education to be given through a telehealth medium. We are also expected to be comfortable with communicating with many individuals outside of the standard interprofessional team often seen in more traditional settings. I believe in the mission of LimbTech and trust the individuals who work there to provide the necessary and ethical care to the population they serve.

Creighton University 

My fieldwork experience at LimbTech was so unique from my other rotations and was a great opportunity for me to grow as a future occupational therapy practitioner. I learned so much about mobility and adaptive equipment, numerous chronic conditions, insurance reimbursement, and documentation. By the end of my rotation, I felt I had grown tremendously in my evaluation skills and my ability to write a thorough letter of medical necessity. I enjoyed working as part of a team every day and learning from others. Thank you to Amy, Kendell, and Lauren for supporting my growth as a student with LimbTech.

My experience at LimbTech was truly transformative, and I will always be grateful for the time I spent with the organization and the connections I made. LimbTech played a pivotal role in shaping me into a more confident, skilled, and compassionate occupational therapist. I gained invaluable knowledge not only in seating and mobility equipment but also in the essential aspects of running a business, including teamwork, referrals, billing, documentation, telehealth, grant writing, marketing, and more.

Leaving LimbTech, I walked away with enhanced clinical skills that have positively guided my OT career, as well as invaluable life skills I will carry with me forever. I’m especially grateful for the mentorship I received from Amy and Kendell, who continue to offer support and guidance long after my time at LimbTech. Their passion for the work they do and the patients they serve is truly inspiring, and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work and learn under their mentorship, serving underserved populations in need.

Valparaiso University

I thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at LimbTech and having the opportunity to work with a wide variety of patients. I gained a deep appreciation for the importance of telehealth, especially in reaching individuals in rural and hard-to-access areas. Seeing firsthand how LimbTech serves these communities reinforced how impactful this work truly is. I also valued learning the business side of practice, including insurance, billing, denials, and addendums. Amy and Kendell took the time to guide me through these processes, which was something I specifically hoped to gain from this fieldwork. Additionally, working alongside Amy and Kendell through the Mobility Matters Foundation and seeing patients pro bono was incredibly meaningful and rewarding.

This experience reinforced my commitment to advocating for patients in every setting. Completing fieldwork during a government shutdown highlighted just how essential telehealth is for patients who might otherwise go without care. I am leaving this placement with a stronger understanding of complex mobility, documentation, advocacy, and the broader systems that impact patient access to care. I am truly grateful for the encouragement, support, and mentorship I received and could not have asked for a better learning environment.

My biggest advice for future students is to find your therapeutic use of self and allow Amy and Kendell to help you grow into the best therapist you can be. Take advantage of the resources they provide, ask questions, and stay engaged. Be open, social, and willing to build connections. This is an incredible placement, but you will get out of it what you put into it. Work hard, stay curious, and you will have an amazing and formative experience.

Belmont University

My experience at LimbTech was truly one of the most rewarding parts of my OT education. What sets LimbTech apart from other fieldwork placements is the incredible amount of support and sense of community you feel throughout the entire experience. Even though the rotation is completed through telehealth, you still develop a strong sense of community with the other students you are working alongside. There is a shared learning experience where everyone encourages one another, asks questions, and grows together. In addition, Amy and Kendell provide an exceptional level of support not only to the group but also to each student individually. They are always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and help students build confidence throughout the rotation. My biggest advice for future students is to not be afraid to ask questions and jump in as quickly as possible. It can feel intimidating at first to step into a new setting, but the more involved you are from the beginning, the more confident you will become. I also encourage students to take advantage of the Google Classroom resources and documents provided throughout the rotation. These resources are extremely valuable for building your knowledge, feeling more prepared when working with patients and ATPs, and gaining confidence in this area of practice. LimbTech truly provides a unique and supportive learning experience that prepares students for future practice.

Shenandoah University

My Level II Fieldwork experience at LimbTech has been one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences of my occupational therapy education. During my 12 weeks here, I have grown tremendously, both professionally and personally. Amy and Kendell genuinely care about your success and growth, not only within LimbTech, but as a clinician preparing to enter the real world.

What sets LimbTech apart is the mentorship, trust, and autonomy. Rather than simply observing or completing isolated tasks, I was challenged to think critically, solve real-world problems, and truly function as a member of the team. While LimbTech specializes in seating and positioning, you learn so much more than just clinical reasoning in complex seating and mobility. You gain valuable experience in leadership, advocacy, community outreach, understanding complex medical equipment, communication, and collaboration. This placement helped me grow not only as a future occupational therapist, but also as a leader.

My advice to future students is to embrace every opportunity, ask questions, and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. The more you invest in this experience, the more you will gain from it. Show up, work hard, and be open to feedback, it will help you grow.

LimbTech is a place where you are genuinely supported, challenged to reach your full potential, and trusted to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the people you serve. It is truly inspiring to see the difference you can make in the community by helping individuals gain access to life-changing medical equipment through innovative telehealth services. Seeing how much independence, safety, and quality of life can be restored through this work has been one of the most meaningful parts of my fieldwork experience. In 12 weeks, I have learned an immense amount of knowledge about meeting patients' mobility needs, interprofessional collaboration, and running a business in health care. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to be part of the LimbTech team. I gained an in-depth knowledge of both the business and clinical aspects of occupational therapy, along with a thorough understanding of seating and mobility. She is easy-to-talk-to, supportive and sets up an environment for her students that is effective in best preparing us for our future careers. I am able to recognize my personal growth as an occupational therapy student during my time at LimbTech, which I am confident is reflective of the meaningful feedback and helpful advice that Amy offered.

Teamwork: There is a strong teamwork dynamic, which benefits the students, the business, and the patients. Collaborating with other students allowed us to learn from each other, support each other, and work together to complete well-written LMN’s efficiently, with the goal of helping our patients receive their required DME/AE as soon as possible. It was really cool to collaborate in teams with OT students from across the country and build relationships within the OTS community.

Limbtech is a fun and unique experience for a fieldwork! Its not your traditional fieldwork, yet you learn and provide so much. Learning about telehealth has opened my eyes to the new possibilities im the OT world. Amy and her team truly set you up for success, but at the same time give you the autonomy and self esteem to feel confident in seating positions, documentation, professionalism, and telehealth as a whole. This placement has helped me both professionally and personally, and for that I’ll forever be grateful.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Limbtech. I learned different skills from the therapists, students, ATPs, and the patients. I developed my documentation and evaluation skills while taking the time to learn more about how Limbtech operates. I learned various aspects of the business side of an organization and the role of an effective occupational therapist. My interaction with patients was a memorable experience and helped me understand the value of telehealth and OT. Wow, where do I start? It was highly rewarding to know that every day at LimbTech changes lives. Mobility aids and wheelchairs can transform a life. To be a part of a team that helps provide these empowering tools, validation, and education for so many patients is incredible. You will learn about the good, bad, and ugly when it comes to OT work, advocacy, insurance laws, and what all goes into showing up for a patient in ethical ways. This FW placement has been nothing short of amazing. I didn’t know what to expect prior to starting this rotation and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had here and people I’ve met. The impacts that we’ve made on patients lives and the positive feedback makes the harder days worth it. Amy, Kendell and Lauren are great educators and they provide a lot of assistance, feedback, and tips and I’m grateful for that. This FW placement has also taught me how to work as a collaborative team to accomplish an end goal. In OTA school there were a few projects that focus on collaboration but at LimbTech it is a team effort day in and day out. I’ve enjoyed my time here and appreciate the kind words, laughs, and advice that’s been shared with me during my rotation here. I’ve had the opportunity to work on community outreach with social media platforms and help create documents to help orient students, like myself into this business. Overall it was a great experience.

With everything going on with COVID, it was really hard for me to find a fieldwork placement as an OTA student. Then I get this message... I was going to be able to work with LimbTech and get to graduate... finally. At first I thought, "I don't care what placement I get, as long as I graduate". Then after a few weeks working with Amy, I realized what a blessing it was to work with LimbTech and to get to know Amy. This ended up being the perfect place for me. Amy is the kindest, most understanding, and hard-working woman I have ever met. She is so dedicated to her work and to her clients. I learned so much in my 14 weeks with her and I will never forget any of it. Working with LimbTech was absolutely one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had in my Occupational Therapy career. LimbTech provided an opportunity to develop the skills needed as a therapist to critically think and look at patients from a holistic lens. In depth evaluations of each patient allowed us to see the whole picture of who the person was, the barriers and supports they had as well as their environment. Piecing this information together to formulate interventions and DME recommendations to best support patient success in valued occupation was a foundational aspect of this fieldwork. Amy guided us through the process while pushing us to develop our own clinical reasoning. She is a great educator who goes out of her way to ensure positive learning experiences. By the end of this fieldwork, I felt competent in my skills as an emerging therapist to provide patient care to support positive outcome measures. 

McHenry County College,  Class of 2021

LimbTech has helped me get a fieldwork placement in a world where in-person learning has become really hard to find. I was unsure how to navigate the world of telehealth. Entering this placement, I was met with a fast paced, high-expectations, ethics driven environment. Dr. Siegler values learning and allows time for students to stop and look at diagnosis and encourages learning and growth as a student. This environment really relies on autonomy and accountability. The work we do helps our patients for many years and we really have the opportunity to change peoples lives. Dr. Siegler also values the role of the OTA and does not discriminate based on the level of education. We are all held to the same standards and all have the same learning opportunity. This placement has helped me grow as a student, person, and future therapist.

Dr. Amy Siegler and Limbtech has helped me grow so much as an OTA student. Going into this placement I was nervous and extremely shy, worried about having to do one on one evaluations with patients over Telehealth. Now, on my final week of this placement, I have seen how much I’ve grown as an individual and as a practitioner. The feedback I received from Amy has been so beneficial, and I learned so much through her. I couldn’t of asked for a better placement. I feel confident going into my career that I will be a very strong COTA, and all through the help of Amy and the wonderful clients we’ve worked with. Thank you so much Limbtech and Amy!
