Today's Tip: Accessible Holiday Decor!
Use bright well-lit decorations. This will not only help visitors who are blind or have low vision with navigating your display and seeing the colors and brightness, but it will also be an inviting attraction for those who are sighted!
Include Tactile Elements. Consider adding ornaments or jingle bells that your guests can hear and feel! For younger guests, consider buying some sensory-friendly craft items such as pipe cleaners, pompoms, and popsicle sticks to create holiday crafts.
If you know you are hosting someone who is blind or vision impaired, consider creating a menu or schedule in braille or large print.
Use smell to enhance the environment. Think about your favorite holiday scents and how they make your heart feel. A candle, simmer pot, or air freshener with the scents of the season will surround your guests in joy. Think, pine, cinnamon, vanilla, etc.
Be mindful of your physical layout. You want to make sure your layout is accessible for anyone in a wheelchair, using a walker or other mobility device, and is clear for guests with vision impairments. Make sure your area is a safe space for people who may need to maneuver through it.
